KICKED OFF 2007 WITH 21 MEDALS

On Sunday, March 3, fourteen of our members competed in one of the largest gathering of karate enthusiasts in the Lower Mainland. Hosted by the Goju-Ryu Uchiage Kai, competitors from as far as the East Coast and the United States made the trek to Richmond.

The team kata division kicked off the competitions early in the morning. Our youth team (age 17 and under), with a solid Gekisai Ichi performance, took home our first medal of the day earning a sliver.

Some highlights include a gold medal Kata performance from our first time competitor, Tommy Cheung.  His younger brother, Angus, took home the silver in Kata after beating more than 20 other competitors. Jerry Zhang and Eddie Au both took home double golds in Kata and Kumite. Henry KC Chan was undefeated in kumite and earned a gold and got a silver in Kata. Our two ladies had a strong performance in Kata with a gold (Monica Ohori) and a bronze (Josephine Hui). Competing in a tough division, Andrew Chan earned a bronze in kumite and Vincent Chan won a bronze in Kata. Kyle Ohori had a fruitful day taking home three silver medals. Also, Jeffrey Yu, Nikkie Yu, Calvin Chan, Gavin Hui, Angus Cheung and Tommy Cheung received a participation medal in paddle Kumite. By the end of the day, our members earned a combined total of 21 medals!

Canada Shoseikan is proud of the karate spirit that its members demonstrated! Even those who did not earn a medal at the tournament won the hearts of those who were there with their determined effort and great sportsmanship attitude.
