2007 PROMOTION TEST #4

Friday, December 14, marked the last time this year that students could hope to move on to a higher level.  For those who joined us in the Fall, this was a special one as it was their first crack at showing off what they have learned to our instructors, Shibucho and Sunday Sensei.

It has nearly been four months since the last exam but has everyone trained hard enough to warrant a promotion? Will the instructors be pleased with what they are going to see? These questions flash before every student as they focused on concentrating for the test.

First up were our white and purple belts.  A total of 6 students were brave enough to face the instructors. As they showed off their basic punches, blocks and kicks, it was clear that the efforts that each had put into the last four months were not in vain.  As sweat trickled down the each of the faces, everyone gave it his all and did the best he could. Finally, after the kata demonstration and kumite, the test was finally over and while exhausted, the students could relax.

Things were just starting for two of the green belt students, however, and the night proved to be still young.  Even the spectators that have gathered at the dojo could tell that this was not an ordinary test.  With muscles straining and sweat glistening, the two students were pushed right to their limits and beyond.  This memorable test was highlighted by the Sanchin kata which included a “hands on” exam by the instructors. To the sounds of whacks and smacks, each student had to concentrate hard to make sure they are flexing every part of their muscles as the instructors made sure every move was perfectly executed.

By the end of the night, everyone was tired but left the dojo with heads held high as each knew that they had done their best. Of course, the only question now is, “Is the best enough?” We will find out soon enough as the results will be declared on the following classes.
