LOWER MAINLAND KARATE COMES TOGETHER

by Eddie Au

Saturday, March 8: The 35th Steveston International Karate Tournament is one the largest competitions of the year.  This year, it seems that in most categories, participation was up.  This is great news for the karate community.

Both the Vancouver and Richmond dojos have been busily preparing for the tournament and by Saturday, everyone was as ready as ever. This year, we are sending a large contingent of students and the result was fantastic!

For some, this is one of their first tournaments and predictably, many were both nervous and excited at the same time. Our white belt kata team performed a strong Taikyoku Jodan, our beginner kata. The competition was tough and the standards throughout the many teams were high. Our team worked well together and earned a silver medal!  Congratulations to Peter Hu, Devin Ohori and Fred Zhang.

In the adult team kata category, Eddie Au, Andrew Chan and Vincent Wong performed the blackbelt kata, Seipai and brought home the bronze medal. Individually, our members also have a strong showing. Combined, there were 4 gold medals, 4 silver and 6 bronze.

The highlight of the day for the Shoseikan club again was in the field of kumite.  This time Henry Chan and Kyle Ohori faced off on the matt.

The air was heavy in anticipation as these two had just finished competing against each other in the individual kata where Henry earned a gold and Kyle a bronze.  Kyle got off to a quick start but the action was fierce. In the end, Kyle earned the gold medal and Henry came away with a silver medal!

In the end, it was a long day but Shoseikan is proud to say that each of our students competed hard and walked away with pride as well as impressive results!

Special thanks to our photographer, Brian Hampson, for all the great shots!
