Something must be special when even the gods mark the occasion with a rare spring snow storm. It might have been cold outside but inside the dojo, the temperature was high from the heat generated by all those who took the promotion test.
For the older members, this may have been their fifth or sixth test so they were prepared and know what to expect. For others, this was a brand new experience and also a time to be nervous.
The testing started promptly at 7:00pm and it began with our novice members. After about 40 minutes of continuous action, the basics, ido and ipon kumite was taken completed. By now, most were learning that earning a higher level was not as easy as it sounds. Dripping with sweat and being short of breath, our novice members waited for their turn to impress the instructors with their kata and dojo kumite.
Soon after, though, it was time for our more senior members to take their exam. With a bit more experience and more practice, the members had to perform more aspects of basics and ido. For example, instead of just one punch, they had to show that they could do a combination of blocks and punches.
By now, the windows of the dojo were fogged with the humidity generated from our members while the snow flew outside.
By the time sampon kumite was completed, some members must have thought they were going to pass out from the rigorous testing and speed at which it was conducted. With a brief breather, our members were right back at performing their three katas needed to complete the test. To our surprise, there was still energy left in them to complete all three!
Finally, after some exciting and entertaining rounds of dojo kumite, the test was finally over. It might have been snowing hard outside, but everyone left the dojo a bit sweatier, very much warmer and a whole lot prouder for knowing they have done their best.
Of course, the question always is.....is the best enough??
