Shoseikan Canada is honoured to be able to participate in the Ming Pao Mini Olympics over the BC Day long weekend at Lansdowne Mall in Richmond. The crowd began to gather at noon for the 1:00pm performance which made some of our newer students a tiny bit nervous.

We began our performance with our MC, Sensei Sunday Lau, calling the entire team onto the stage and demonstrated what we call our basics - a series of exercises dedicated to teach the core techniques of karate’s punch, block and kick.

Peter Zhang, Theodore Lee and Karmina Cordero were our first group to perform the team kata, Taikyoku Jodan. They gave an amazingly strong performance and whet our audience’s appetite for more.  Following that, three other teams performed Gekisai Ichi, Saifa and Seipai.  By all accounts, everyone did a superb job and had a lot of fun with this new eing on stage?experience which for some was quite different than being in a competition.

Now it was time for the main attraction. Andrew Chan and Vincent Wong were scheduled to perform two board breaking events.  Andrew successfully demonstrated how to break boards using four different methods consecutively.  Congratulations, Andrew!

Next, Vincent Wong was on stage to show everyone how to correctly smash through a towering stack of solid wood boards with his hand. The air was heavy with anticipation as Vincent mentally prepared himself as well.  All was silent. Then, in an instant that was as long as a blink of an eye along with a glass shattering kiai, every single board laid on the stage broken in half by Vincent’s karate chop!

Canada Shoseikan rounded out its performance by kumite demonstrations by Angus Cheung, Nikki Yu, Henry Chan and Tommy Cheung.

The 30 minute performance flew by like a blur but the positive experience would be remembered for a long time.  Congratulations to everyone for a job well done!  Canada Shoseikan would like to thank Ming Pao for its invitation to the Mini Olympics.  We are already looking forward to the next event!
