With the excitement of the Winter Olympics and the success of the past several karate tournaments still lingering, some of our hard working members took their first promotion test of the year.

Expectations were extremely high as only a few were given an opportunity to be graded.  Only those who showed great efforts during the lessons and had superb attendance were invited for the test.  By all accounts from the instructors and examiners, these students did not disappoint!  Their high level of performance is to be commended.

The promotion test began at 6:00pm at the main dojo on February 27.  The examiners overseeing the proceedings were Lau Sensei and Chan Shibucho.  All seven members taking part arrived on time and were anxious for the test to get started.

As with tradition, the while and purple belts were put through their paces first.  Nicolas, Kelly, Lukas, Ken and Samuel were tested on their Dachi, Kihon, Ido and Kata.  After much sweat and effort, they finished with flying colours.  The next group of higher belts consisted of Gary, Jeffrey and Nikkie.  In addition to some basis testing, each were asked to perform two katas individually and sparred with each other in pairs.

After the testing was finished, Lau Sensei and Shibucho gave the students some valuable comments on how each can improve.  Lau Sensei stressed the importance of perfecting the fundamentals as “basic is so important in Karate.”  Shibucho asked each student to remain focused.  “It is so important to persevere in all that we do,” he said.
