38TH STEVESTON KARATE TOURNAMENT

FEBRUARY 26, 2011

By Henry KC Chan

Richmond, Snow, Karate?!.. It is the 38th Steveston Karate Tournament host by Uchiage-Kai.

On the cold and blizzard like Saturday of February 26th, 10 Shoseikan members march onto this grand and infamous tournament of the region. Along the far reaches  of the province as well as visitors from the States, all have  gathered around this large covered area that we use as the competition area amongst them include parents, judges, numerous senseis as well as the competitors that carry hearts of fire and wills of steel that will burn and sharpen as the tournament proceeds throughout the day, each of them looking upon the gold medal that awaits them. At this year's tournament, competitors from the age of five through fifty , all were soaked wet from the anxiety that torments their body as they wait quietly for their turn to perform on the mats that will determine their fate in receiving a medal.

Our members listen attentively as categories are called out numerically to the marshalling area. As you see them go, one by one, you see courage and bravery on their foreheads that lead them to their competition. No matter it being Kata or Kumite,  with strength and encouragement from their  family and friends, each of them individually or as a team, perform wondrously to astonish the audience and judges.

From travelling to the tournament before the sun fully risen till leaving when the night has begun, each member that have gone to the tournament came back with a medal in their hand, praise from their friends and family, acknowledgement of their effort in their  training, as well as experience that will help them on their path of learning the true way of karate (Karate-do) .
