Kumite simply means sparring, and is one of the major training sections of Karate training. In fact, there are several types of Kumite: Ippon Kumite, Sanbon Kumite, Kiso Kumite (or Kihon Kumite), and Jiyu Kumite.

Ippon Kumite and Sanbon Kumite are prearranged sparring, typically used to develop the basic drill, speed, strength and technique that Kumite required. Kiso Kumite (or Kihon Kumite) is an structured sparring drawn from a Kata. In English wording, it could also means the application of Kata.

Jiyu Kumite means free sparring, which completely no free and random. All the techniques are delivered by the Karate-ka (or Athlete) based on his own judgment and decision.

Kumite is an essential part of Karate training, and free sparring is often experienced as exciting, because both opponents have to react and adapt to each other very quickly.

Today, in most competition Karate event, Kumite is a non-contact fighting event. Athletes are allowed to deliver punching and kicking with protection gears. Successful athletes has excellent technical and tactical skills but also high level of physical fitness. Kumite can be used to develop a particular technique or a skill (e.g. effectively judging and adjusting your distance from your opponent) or it can be done in competition.

According to the WKF rules, a score is awarded only the technique is reached to the following six criteria. For more details,

WE ARE NCCP CERTIFIED!

Shoseikan Canada is proud to announce that beginning September 2008,  all of its instructors are NCCP certified.  National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is the recognized national standard for certification in 65 different sports including Karate.  Our aim is to continually provide our instructors the tools to deliver a Karate program of the highest callibre.

CHILDREN FITNESS TAX CREDIT
